Hi everyone,
Today I am going to be talking about how to deal with exam stress and the pressures to do well in exams and get certain grades. I'm no expert on how to do well in exams but I do know a fair bit about controlling stress and the pressure to get certain grades in exams as I have gone through 4 years of secondary school exams (including mock exams and soon to be actual GCSE exams).
My first tip on how to deal with stress is by revising, I know revision is boring at times but it is a massive way of stopping you from getting as stressed. It is always a good idea to revise because there is nothing worse than going into an exam and panicking because you haven't done any revision, it usually calms you down if you know you have revised even a little bit because at least you feel a bit prepared. A way to make revision slightly more bearable is to do it with a friend and make colourful mind maps, you could even make your own revision playlist which is what I always do around exam time!
Make sure you are doing small amounts of revision every week or once you have finished a certain topic in a subject, this will just mean that you wont have to do excessive amounts of revision for every subject all at once. And all you'll have to do a couple of weeks before your exam is go over all of your flash cards or other revision material to make sure you know it all in preparation for the exam.
Make sure you have regular breaks from revision as I have learnt that by doing hours of revision without a break in between just tends to make you tired, stressed out and usually means you aren't as productive and tend to procrastinate a lot more. Go out with a friend to a movie or for dinner - do whatever you both find a treat and enjoy doing!
Revise for your exam using old exam papers and mark schemes, this will mean that when you come to doing the actual exam you'll know what each question looks like and will know what kind of answer you need to give as you would have seen the mark scheme for a similar question. You'll also be able to predict how well you may do in the exam and what topics you need to revise more of.
Make sure you ask your teachers how you can improve your grade, this will mean you'll be able to see what you need to do to ensure you get the best grade possible, this will also mean that if you do end up doing not so well in your exam, your teacher will know that you have tried and you have done lots of revision in preparation for your exam.
It is important to remember that if you are disappointed with your results that exam results on a bit of paper don't show anything about how intelligent you are or how well you will do in the future and that if you don't get the grade you wanted, you can always re-take the exam. One of my best friends told me this and it definitely helped before and during exams when I was feeling slightly nervous.
Let me know if you have any revision tips in the comments below!
